Hydrogen and wind power could soon be used to fuel the production of the water of life.
Scotch whisky distilleries on Speyside are going to be among the initial customers for a planned green hydrogen hub north of Inverness.
ScottishPower and Storegga, a developer of energy projects, hope to make the clean fuel available by 2024.
An onshore electrolyser north of Inverness would produce the hydrogen using renewable energy. The fuel would then be available to be transported to sites around the Highlands.
A feasibility study involving whisky giants such as Diageo, Whyte & Mackay and Glenmorangie was carried out last year. All three are expected to be among the customers for hydrogen from the new facility.
