The Green Party’s (MDG) party leader Une Bastholm believes supporting the development of nuclear power plants in Norway would be a derailment of the energy debate.

The MDG leader has so far stayed away from the party’s nuclear debate. However, during the party’s national meeting at Fornebu on Friday, she decided to articulate a clear position.

“Nuclear power would be a derailment in the Norwegian energy debate,” she told NTB.

The MDG’s youth party believes that the MDG should step in and study nuclear power in Norway.

Bastholm: Different focus needed

Bastholm believes that Norway should instead focus on offshore wind, carbon capture and storage, and green shipping.

“I think it is unrealistic and does not benefit the renewable investment in Norway if we were to speak out to develop nuclear power here,” she said.

“It is important that we, as a green party, contribute to keeping the focus (on areas) where Norway has the most to contribute in terms of the shift to renewables. And that is not nuclear power.”
